Romance and splashy show numbers side-by-side with the Hungerford Memory Choir
The Hungerford Memory Choir were once again at St Lawrence’s Church in Hungerford on Wednesday. And, enjoying another great success, they were in fine voice.
In a lyrical and wide-ranging programme, we all began – the 50-something strong choir (many living with dementia) and more than 180 in the audience – with a practised warm-up routine to enliven the voice, face and lungs while relaxing the shoulders. The opening number was a three-way round of the French nursery song Frѐre Jacques, with the choir singing the first two parts and the audience singing the third.
There were songs from West Side Story, The Sound of Music and other show favourites. Many members sang solos and there was a superbly romantic rendition of The Wonder of You in duet, alongside big choir songs lifting the roof of St Lawrence. Finishing with Always Look on the Bright Side of Life and, appropriately enough in the church setting, and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, it was a joyous and heart-warming occasion, enjoyed by all.
Back around Christmas. Be there!
