Molly Brown discusses songwriting, live shows and her latest release
Local singer-songwriter Molly Brown joined Kennet Radio’s Saturday Showcase this weekend, sharing her journey as an independent artist and performing a selection of her latest releases.
Originally from Bucklebury, Molly has recently returned to the area after graduating from university and is now focusing on building her career as a solo artist. Reflecting on the past year, she described her progress as steady but encouraging. “It is a slow process, but particularly looking over the past year, I do think things are beginning to fall into place,” she said.
Her music is rooted in real-life experiences, often shaped by personal relationships, but with a distinctive twist. Rather than dwelling on difficult moments, Molly uses songwriting as a way to reframe them. “I see the whole songwriting process as turning a negative experience into something positive,” she explained. Her lyrics often balance emotional honesty with a layer of sarcasm, giving her songs both depth and relatability.

That honesty carries through into her creative process, which can be surprisingly quick. Some of her songs take shape in as little as twenty minutes, with melodies and lyrics coming together in one sitting before being refined later. From there, she collaborates with producers to develop the full sound, something she clearly enjoys. “The difference between the demo I send and then what I get back is crazy,” she said.
Molly has worked with a range of producers, each bringing their own influence to her music. These collaborations have helped her explore different styles, including a more defined pop direction in her latest single Thank You To That, which she described as a turning point. “It’s a very pop anthem sort of feel… I’ve been trying to reach that pop kind of feel and that’s kind of hit the nail on the head really.”
Alongside releasing new music, Molly is increasingly focused on live performance. She is building experience as a solo performer, accompanying herself on piano rather than relying on a full band. Upcoming appearances include sets at Newbury Racecourse, Berkshire Country Fair, Renegade Brewery and the Shaw House Festival, as she continues to establish herself on the local scene.
Looking ahead, Molly plans to continue releasing singles consistently while working towards a larger project. Although she is considering an EP, her main focus is on maintaining momentum. “Consistency is definitely key… just keep going and hope that it reaches the right people,” she said.
Her long-term aim is simple but ambitious: to move closer to making music a full-time career. For now, she is balancing that goal with regular releases, live performances and growing her audience both locally and beyond.
