Virtual Community Choir

A dedication turns into an online community event

A couple of weeks ago, one of Kennet Radio’s Breakfast Show presenters was asked to play a special dedication.

Newbury nurse Sarah Franklin, asked Chris Boulton to play a song for members of the public who had kindly supported her and the nursing team at Basingstoke Hospital with food. 

The song she asked for was I’d like to Teach the World to Sing.

Meanwhile Newbury’s Corn Exchange is looking for innovative ideas for more on-line activities because the theatre is closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. 

After his show, Chris was speaking to Corn Exchange director Katy Griffiths.  One thing led to another, and the idea came about to create a virtual community choir, with local people singing the song.

As a result of this, the Corn Exchange has got together with Berkshire Maestros to create our very own online community choir.

So far, nearly 300 local people have signed up for online tutorials last week to learn the song.  But there is still time to get involved.

All participants are being asked to record and send their own performance of I’d Like To Teach the World To Sing to the Corn Exchange by 6pm Monday 13^th April.

All the individual performances will be combined to create a community choir video, with the aim of it being released on World Voice Day, Sunday Thursday 16^th April.
