Thatcham Town take a point

Thatcham came from two goals down to pick up a point at Lowther Park.

On a bone dry pitch, which clearly hasn’t seen water for many weeks, Wokingham made the brighter start.

Sam Lynskey gave Thatcham an early warning as he beat Maciej Wieczorek to a cross from the left but his header dropped wide. But on 13 minutes the Sumas were in front when a free-kick from the right was inch-perfect for Aaron Peprah-Baah to sweep home.

The Kingfishers threatened from corners and long throws into the box, with Andy Matthews proving to be a menace for Wokingham with his height.  However, Wokingham added a second on 27 minutes when Kieran Downing tapped home at the far post.

Cam Philbey’s side got a crucial goal back just before the break when Matthews connected with Callum Willmoth’s corner and the ball dropped to Archie Denton to blast home.

And there was nearly an equaliser on the stroke of half-time as Willmoth’s 25 yard free kick was parried by Jake Simpson but Kye Williams was unable to turn it home.

The Kingfishers made a bright start to the second half with Dontae Hamblin, Callum Winchcombe and Levi Heholt having chances without seriously troubling the home goalkeeper.

But after Charlie Knight was fouled, Town did find the net as Winchcombe’s deep free-kick was headed into the danger zone by Matthews and Knight turned the ball home.

A few minutes later, the combination was almost repeated after Hamblin was tripped but this time the Wokingham defence managed to bundle Knight’s effort wide of the post.  Heholt then had a firm shot saved, and Town pressed with the wide men Hamblin and Sofroniou looking lively.

At the other end Wokingham had some openings without really troubling Wieczorek, with Naz Miah firing a free-kick narrowly over.

In the dying moments Town almost won it when Matthews headed Willmoth’s corner over from close range. But, in the end, the points were shared.
