Sir Ed Davey Visits Local Farm to Discuss Impact of Proposed Family Farm Tax
Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey visited a West Berkshire farm this week to meet local farmers and hear their concerns about the pressures facing the industry — particularly the potential impact of Labour’s proposed family farm tax.
The visit, part of a wider tour of rural communities, focused on the realities of running small family farms in a challenging economic climate. Sir Ed praised the dedication of those who continue traditional farming across generations, describing their work as vital to both the countryside and the national economy.
“It’s a great farm and the cattle they’re rearing are just wonderful,” he said. “But the message is about Labour’s failure to really understand farming and how families from generation to generation farm — and how they’re not really making much money, and it’s a risky business.”
Sir Ed went on to criticise the proposed tax, saying it would unfairly hit small and family-run farms across the UK.
“Rachel Reeves and Labour seem to think that the family farm tax is a fair thing. It just isn’t,” he said. “It’s going to hurt agriculture and hurt our country. It’s a nightmare for these families. People are really upset, and the impact it’s going to have on their family and their farm is huge.”
The visit ended with discussions on the need for policies that protect rural livelihoods and encourage sustainable farming for future generations.
