Ricochet on the Rise with Fresh Sound and Big Ambition

Ricochet bring energy, ambition and a refreshing honesty to the local music scene, and their recent appearance on Kennet Radio’s Saturday Showcase offered a brilliant insight into a band clearly on the rise.

The band introduced themselves as Jack on guitar and vocals, Charlie on guitar, bass and vocals, Jacob on guitar, piano and bass, and Henry on drums. Despite already sounding like a tight, well established group, they are still very much at the beginning of their journey.

Still all in Year 10, the group might be young, but they already have a strong sense of identity and direction. Formed during their early school years, the band came together through a shared love of music and a willingness to just give it a go. As they explained, “we all started clicking and then we played at the school… and yeah, he was really good. So we all started… I think we clicked quite well almost immediately.”

Even their name has that organic, slightly accidental origin story that so many bands share. After throwing around ideas like “picks and sticks” and “sizable boulders,” they landed on Ricochet, initially as a placeholder, but one that stuck. “We thought that’ll do for now and then we never came up with anything better.”

Balancing school life with being in a band is not always straightforward. With mock exams on the horizon and busy schedules, practice time can be limited, but the commitment is still there. “We do practice, but it’s not as often as we’d like… we’re all quite busy with revising and studying as well.” Despite that, when they do get together, it clearly works.

Their creativity extends beyond the music itself and into how they present themselves online. The band have embraced social media in a way that feels authentic and fun, using it to showcase both their music and their personalities. “It’s boring just sitting in a room… so let’s sit in a bath or go in the garden… and try to hook the viewers in.” That approach has already paid off, with one of their early videos hitting around 100,000 views.

Songwriting is a collaborative process, shaped by each member’s influences and ideas. While one person might bring the initial structure, the final result is very much a group effort. Speaking about their single Now I’m Alone, they said, “we all sat down and wrote the lyrics together… and we all added our little bits and ended up sounding really good.” It is a track that clearly means a lot to them, not just as their first release, but as a true joint creation.

Their newer track Atlas shows another side of the band, both musically and creatively. The name itself came from an unexpected place. “I was coaching a kid and his name was Atlas and I thought, well, that’s a great name… and then I went home and I just tried to write a song about it.” From there, the song evolved into something that reflects the band’s broader influences and sound.

Those influences are wide ranging, which is part of what gives Ricochet their edge. From Arctic Monkeys and Oasis to Radiohead and newer bands, each member brings something different. “We all have quite a different set of inspirations… and I think that contributes to our sound,” they explained. The result is a set that “takes you on a journey,” moving between heavier moments and more melodic, softer tracks.

Live performance is already a big part of their story. A standout moment so far has been playing at The Purple Turtle in Reading, which they described as “one of our biggest gigs… an amazing night atmosphere.” It is clear they are eager for more opportunities like that as they continue to build their profile.

Looking ahead, the focus is on recording more material. With a growing catalogue of songs but only a couple released so far, they are keen to get more of their music out there. “We’ve got quite a big repertoire and we’ve only got two down… once we get them, we’ll just keep them coming.”

For a band at such an early stage, Ricochet already show a level of maturity, teamwork and enthusiasm that suggests there is plenty more to come. They may still be juggling school and exams, but they are firmly on the path to something bigger.
