Newbury 10K – Matt Green smashes it!

Matt Green romped home in the Newbury 10K with a time of 34 minutes, 15 seconds and a massive 1-minute lead over second place Matthew Quartermain.  Simon Watson came in just behind for third place.

We didn’t have long to wait – not even four minutes – for the women’s winner Josie Robertson to appear, followed by Victoria Duncan and Gemma Jones.

In glorious sunshine, Newbury Athletic Club staged its 14th Newbury 10K, a town based multi-terrain race, alongside two shorter races for under 16s.  All three courses started and finished in the noisy, jubilant atmosphere of the town centre in Market Place.  With over 1,000 entries the streams of returning runners took another hour to complete after the winners had returned, guided in by the “unmissably pink” Velo bicycle marshals.

The 10K features a gentle climb for the first 3km, followed by a short descent and the rest of the course is flat.  About 7km of the course is on the road, with the remainder taking place on footpaths in beautiful surrounding countryside and along the tow path of the Kennet and Avon Canal.  Two runners – both women – have completed every single Newbury 10K!

All of the profits from the event are split between hosts Newbury Athletic Club, pillar of support Newbury Soup Kitchen and drop-in centre Loose Ends Newbury.  More than 100 volunteers gave their time and skills to the event.

For those who missed their chance in Newbury or can’t get enough of running a 10K, Highclere is staging its own 10K on 22nd September, with entries now open.
