Moving Together: 5K Your Way Comes to Greenham Common

A supportive and welcoming initiative is helping people across Newbury take steps forward — at their own pace.

5K Your Way, Move Against Cancer is a community-led group designed for anyone living with or beyond cancer, as well as their families, friends and those working in cancer services. The aim is simple: to create a safe, relaxed space where people can move, connect and support one another.

Meeting on the last Saturday of every month at Greenham Common parkrun, the group encourages participants to take part in whatever way feels right for them. That might mean walking, jogging, running, volunteering, cheering others on, or simply coming along for a chat and coffee afterwards.

There’s no pressure and no expectations — just the opportunity to be around others who understand.

Local ambassadors Sue, Cathy, Heather, Gayle and Claire are there each month to welcome newcomers. Whether someone wants company for the course or simply a conversation, the group is built around flexibility and understanding.

As one participant recently shared:
“It was the motivation from 5K Your Way that I needed… getting me out of my bed on a cold morning to go to parkrun. I’d often thought about going but just couldn’t get motivated — this helped, and I really enjoyed the morning. It was the first time I’d taken part since 2020.”

Participants meet at 8:45am for a 9am start, gathering by the blue flag near the parkrun start on the old runway tarmac at Greenham Common.

5K Your Way is provided by the MOVE Against Cancer charity and is completely free to attend.

The message behind it is straightforward: you don’t have to do this alone — and you can take part in whatever way works for you.
