Local Labour representative discusses council finances and community issues
A local Labour representative has been speaking to Kennet Radio about council finances, rural concerns and how residents can get involved in local politics.
Lee Allen shared his perspective on the current financial position of West Berkshire Council, describing the situation as challenging. “This year the council got really close to having to file a section 114,” he said, referring to the process used when a council is at risk of effective bankruptcy.
He added that government support had been required and suggested that, without changes, this could continue. “Unless there’s real changes, we’re going to have to rely on bailouts from the government,” he said.
Discussing future budgets, Lee outlined areas where he believes savings could be made, including reviewing council structures and spending priorities. He also highlighted the importance of longer term financial planning, saying the council should focus on “cutting spending and saving money effectively without damaging West Berkshire residents.”
On social care, he emphasised the need to maintain support for vulnerable residents. “We don’t want cuts to that sector,” he said, noting the importance of services for both adults and children.
Lee also spoke about wider concerns within the council, referencing findings from a recent independent review. “There were numerous issues… a blurred line between councillors and staff,” he said, adding that he would like to see less political conflict in local decision making.
He suggested that reducing what he described as “petty party politics” could encourage more people to get involved in local government.
Alongside council finances, Lee highlighted a range of issues affecting rural communities, particularly in areas such as Lambourn and Eastbury. These include housing conditions, road safety and flooding.
“I’ve dealt with a lot recently… from social housing to quite nasty cases of mould and damp,” he said, also pointing to ongoing discussions with local residents about road safety concerns.
Looking ahead, he encouraged residents interested in local politics to find out more through local party channels and social media.
As with all political interviews, Kennet Radio provides a platform for a range of views from across the community.
