Level 50 and Redefining Life After Work

Clive, the creator of the YouTube channel Level 50 Lifestyle, joined Kennet Radio to talk about life after 50 and why he believes the traditional idea of retirement no longer fits many people today.

Clive describes himself as part of Generation X, a generation shaped by growing up in the 1970s and 1980s and later adapting to the digital world. He explained that generations are often defined by formative years, and for Generation X that meant childhood and teenage years shaped by major cultural moments, from punk and early electronic music to the rise of rave culture and global pop icons.

Speaking about his own content, Clive said that many of the experiences he talks about resonate widely. “I get comments from America and other countries saying they had exactly the same experiences. The Generation X experience is very universal, especially across the Western world,” he said.

A major theme of Clive’s work is challenging the idea of retirement as an ending. He explained that his channel focuses on what he calls “post level 50”, which could mean people in their 50s, 60s or beyond. “You reach level 50 and then that’s it. This is act two,” he said. “I don’t think the old idea of retirement applies to the Gen X mindset.”

Clive shared his view that retirement is often described in three phases: the “go-go years”, the “slow-go years” and the “no-go years”. His aim has been to maximise the go-go years by retiring early and reducing stress, allowing time for travel, creativity and personal projects. While he acknowledged that early retirement is not possible for everyone, he suggested that de-stressing work, changing roles or finding alternative income streams can help people reclaim time and energy.

Reflecting on his own journey, Clive said his decision to retire early was not gifted. “I had to make sacrifices, but I found a way to make it work so I could maximise those early years and pursue things I want to pursue,” he said.

Clive also encouraged listeners not to be afraid of starting something new later in life. When asked about starting a YouTube channel after 50, he said, “We’ve all got a camera on our phone that’s good enough quality. Just do it. Publish it and see what happens. You never know who might relate to it.”

He added that confidence grows over time and that simple equipment, such as a small clip-on microphone, is more than enough to get started. “Every journey starts with the first step,” he said. “Get it out there.”
