Game management cost Thatcham Town

Thatcham began the 2026/27 season with a defeat 3:1 at the hands of Penn & Tylers Green.

On a hot afternoon the two sides produced an entertaining game in which the momentum shifted frequently. But Thatcham will regret conceding two quickfire goals shortly before half-time.

The hosts, Division 1 champions last season, started brightly.  After forcing a couple of early corners, they worked an opportunity for Joel Ellis in the centre of goal but Maciej Wieczorek made a fantastic block.

Kyle Tooze, back in Thatcham colours, had a good opening but rolled a shot wide but on 12 minutes Town took the lead through Dontae Hamblin.  The left winger battled past his marker, then weaved into space inside the area and fired a low strike past the goalkeeper.

Driven by Callum Willmoth and Levi Heholt in the middle of the park, Town were in the ascendancy as Andy Matthews flicked a header wide from Tooze’s centre, then Kye Williams cut inside but fired over.

But with half-time approaching, a through ball carved Town’s defence open which allowed Ellis to square for Adam Crocker to tap home. Two minutes later, Penn scored again, when the ball was half-cleared to Aitor Pasantes who looped home a 20 yarder.

In the second half Thatcham gradually applied pressure on the Penn goal, as keeper Carl Dennison pushed a Luke Polding shot wide, then made a fingertip save to deny Tooze.  The stopper then clawed away a Willmoth corner which looked to be swinging in, and clutched a Matthews header under his crossbar.

But Penn & Tylers Green were always threatening on the break, as Lennon Moore flicked a header wide from in front of goal, then Wieczorek pushed Crocker’s near-post effort around the post.

Pasantes struck the post, then with time running out and Town throwing caution to the wind, he put Kajtek Halatyn through on goal and the sub rolled home the third.

Thatcham still created chances, with Charlie Knight hooking one over the bar, but missed chances and game management cost Thatcham in the season’s opener.
