Bit of a slip-up at Thatcham Town

Thatcham slipped to a three goal home defeat at the hands of Burnham.

The visitors made a lightning start, establishing a two-goal lead within four minutes to leave the Kingfishers with a mountain to climb. First Shyon Dennis was played through the middle, rounded Maciej Wieczorek and rolled the ball home. Then Ibrahim Diakite exploited space down the right and centred for Dennis to knock home his second.

Thatcham tried to get a foothold in the game, with Charlie Knight firing wide, then Luke Polding hitting a chance straight at the keeper.  Archie Cunningham in the visitors’ goal then made a crucial save, glancing Polding’s firm strike over the top.

Thatcham were a threat at set pieces but Burnham remained lively, attacking with pace and looking dangerous on both flanks.

On 36 minutes, it was three to the visitors as Shuaib Ali headed home from Ron Sosoli’s cross, and Wieczorek saved from Diakite on the stroke of half-time.

After the break Thatcham continued to create the occasional opening, as Callum Winchcombe fired just over from 25 yards and Knight flicked Dontae Hamblin’s cross just wide at the near post.

But the visitors held firm at the back, and looked just as likely to extend their lead, with Ali hitting the outside of the post from Dennis’ run and centre.

Cam Philbey’s side next travel to Abingdon United on Tuesday evening before turning their attentions to the FA Cup, when they face Mangotsfield away next Saturday.
