5G testing goes live in Newbury

Vodafone confirmed earlier in the week that it has now switched on its live 5G testing. Newbury is just one of only six towns or cities in the UK to receive rollout of 5G this year.

Due to its fast response time, 5G is ideal for connecting machinery, healthcare systems, and even traffic lights and car parks to improve congestion in towns and cities.

This news follows a series of announcements from Vodafone including the testing of prototype smartphones across a live 5G network, the world’s first 5G holographic call as well as a £10m investment in ‎its HQ, which will see a gain of 600 jobs.

Commenting on the news, Gabrielle Mancini, West Berkshire Council’s Economic Development Officer, said: “This is absolutely fantastic news for Newbury, the speeds and connectivity that will come with 5G will make Newbury an even better place to do business and will also bring about new possibilities for service delivery for us as a local authority.
