What a sight!  D-Day 80 convoy was amazing!

At last, the D-Day 80 weekend of commemoration and celebration arrived.  And what a sight that convoy was!

Working its way from a start in Basingstoke, through Kingsclere, Greenham Business Park and Newbury Town Centre before ending in Hungerford, it was delayed at Greenham by a slow-moving steam engine. But the crowds in Hungerford High Street were still four deep.  The wild cheering and waving in brilliant June sunshine said it all – that convoy was a smash success!

The Corn Exchange was full of 1940s stalls – including old-style sweets, model planes, wartime ration displays and toys.  Historical talks were taking place all morning and well into the afternoon. The Military Academy Wives Choir and more events are going on throughout the day.

Still a day to go, with a free event being held from 10am at Triangle Filed (Hungerford Rugby Club), with a military themed show ground event.  Look out for more military vehicles, vintage cars, Home Guard display and rifle drills.  Oh!, and a traditional NAAFI.  Be there!
