St Nicolas school pupil wins design contest for civic award
Suraiya Sheikh, who attends St Nicolas Junior School, is the winner of the Newbury Town Council Civic Awards Pin Badge Competition.
The competition was launched to find a winning design for a pin badge to be used as the award to recipients of the new Community Champions award category. The Community Champions Award is a one-off award as part of the Town Council’s Civic Awards scheme to celebrate the achievement of those who have given back to the local community in direct response to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Upon finding out her design was the winner, 8-year-old Suraiya said:
I am really pleased and excited to have won the competition because I really like drawing and arts and crafts. When I’m not doing art, I enjoy dancing, gardening on our allotment and going cycling around Newbury. During lockdown I have also been able to spend more time playing with my younger sister Hana and little brother Raafi. I believe that in this bad time we can work together and keep Newbury happy and safe and that everyone who wears the badge will try and do that.
All nominees of this award category will be recognised as a Newbury Town Community Champion by receiving this special pin badge for their services to the town and residents throughout the Covid pandemic.
