Shakespeare, But Not As You Know It – On Stage This Weekend
Kennet Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS) are back at Bucklebury Memorial Hall with their latest production, Everybody’s Talking About Shakespeare (…a serious comedy) – and it’s already proving to be a hit with local audiences.
This isn’t Shakespeare as you remember from school. Instead, KATS deliver a fast-moving evening of comedy, sketches, songs and dance numbers, all designed to poke fun at the Bard in new and unexpected ways. Several of the sketches were written by members of the cast, which gave the show a fresh, personal edge and let the group’s creativity really shine.
And expect the unexpected: one minute it’s a witty take on one of Shakespeare’s classics, the next you’re looking at a cast member in a Hawaiian shirt, flippers and a bright pink inflatable flamingo ring.
It’s not just about the laughs, though. There are also some excellent musical numbers, showing off the cast’s vocal talents and giving the performance variety and pace. The mix of live singing, comic timing and ensemble work kept the audience engaged throughout, and the reaction in the hall was one of constant laughter and applause.
Part of the show’s appeal is its variety. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Victoria Wood, Upstart Crow, Something Rotten! and Monty Python, while blending in original material, the production gives every member of the company a chance to take the spotlight. It was clear on opening night that the cast were having just as much fun as the audience.
Directed by Mandy Cole and Janet Kilgallon-Brook, with writing contributions from Karen Richardson and a dedicated backstage team, the show feels like a real team effort. From start to finish, it’s packed with energy, invention and good humour.
If you haven’t seen it yet, there’s still time. There are two performances left – tonight (Friday 29th August) and tomorrow (Saturday 30th August) at Bucklebury Memorial Hall. Tickets are available at kats.org.uk.
Don’t miss this chance to see local theatre at its funniest and most creative.
