Run Britannia: David’s Epic Journey for Sue Ryder
While most of us are dodging rain or cheering on football matches, local runner David Clyde has been doing something extraordinary — running the entire length of Britain to raise money for Sue Ryder, a charity that provided end-of-life care for his mum.
David is now two weeks and 450 miles into Run Britannia, a multi-ultra marathon challenge that covers the length of the UK. With over 14,000 metres of elevation already climbed, he’s currently just south of Preston — and after a much-needed rest day yesterday, he’s back on the road today with Scotland firmly in his sights by Thursday.

The journey hasn’t been easy.
“I’ve been struggling with tendon pain in my left lower shin — and now in the right too — so I’m battling through a little slower than I’d like,” David shared. “It’s very tough, but who said it would be easy?” Since setting off in Cornwall, David has taken on steep coastal paths, estuary crossings, and mountain trails — through sun, rain, and fields full of curious cows. Every day has been a mental and physical challenge, with some stretches pushing over 40 miles in a single day.
Thankfully, he’s had company — both from other runners and surprise visits from friends, plus the support of those following his journey. But this isn’t just about endurance — it’s about purpose. David is running in memory of his mum and raising vital funds for Sue Ryder, whose support made all the difference to her final months. “It’s not about speed anymore — it’s about survival and progress. And doing it for something that matters.”
