KATS Production of The 39 Steps
I saw The 39 Steps by the brilliant Kennet Amateur Theatrical Society (KATS) last night (Thursday 31st July 2025) – and it was an absolute triumph.
Adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s novel and the classic Alfred Hitchcock film, this version is a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek romp that combines the suspense of a spy thriller with the silliness of a comedy sketch show – and had the audience in stitches from start to finish.
What makes this show so clever is its use of just four actors to play over 100 characters. The KATS cast pulled it off with remarkable flair, switching roles, accents, and costumes in a flash. Whether they were suave spies, bumbling policemen, or eccentric Scottish innkeepers, their comic timing and energy were absolutely spot on.

The physical comedy was brilliantly executed, and the chemistry between the cast members made it all feel seamless. Behind the scenes, the slick direction, imaginative props, and clever use of lighting and sound kept the pace racing along and brought a real professional finish to the performance.
Even if you’re not familiar with the original story, this production is a joy. It’s inventive, chaotic in the best way, and a fantastic showcase of local talent.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ve still got time – the show is back tonight (Friday) and again on Saturday. I highly recommend grabbing a ticket if you can. You’re in for a fast, funny, and fabulous evening.
