Waste Vehicle Stuck in Old Bath Road, Newbury

A waste vehicle has become victim of a sink hole which has opened up in Newbury.

The vehicle travelling along the Old Bath Road at the time fell into a developing sink hole around 1.30pm today, Thursday 5th July.

Thames Valley Police, quick to respond, closed the road for safety reasons and allowing space for a recovery to take place.

An emergency closure of the road between Strawberry Hill and Leys Gardens has been issued by the District Council with a diversion in place between Oxford Road and the A4.

West Berkshire Council have said that the problem is being assessed with a further update to follow.

The vehicle has been recovered, however Old Bath Road will remain closed until tomorrow when repair works will begin.

Excavation work has started on Old Bath Road to find the cause of the collapse before starting the repair.

The road will remain closed over the weekend as the size of the hole and extent of repair required is currently unknown.

Complications with the ongoing repairs will mean that Old Bath Road will have to remained closed for a further 24 hours, until 6am Friday morning.
