Special recycling points for some household items

West Berkshire Council provide a range of recycling activities.

In addition, there are a number of places locally where you can recycle items that don’t currently have a specific local council recycling route.

Some of these places are:

Medicine packets – also known as “blister packs – are received by Superdrug at their pharmacy counters, including at their store at 81/82 Northbrook Street, Newbury. Details are on the Superdrug website here.

Single-use face masks can be dropped off at Wilkinson, 13-15 Northbrook Street, Newbury. See details here.

Domestic batteries – these are accepted by Cancer Research at 27, Market Place, Newbury. They ask that you tape together used “coin-style” batteries. Full details are here. West Berkshire Council also publishes a list of local Household Battery Recycling Points here, which include Hungerford, Newbury and Thatcham libraries.

Used Water filter cartridges – can be dropped off at Robert Dyas, See full details here.

Pens and pencils, along with bottle tops and small batteries can be dropped off at Hamstead Norreys Community Shop. Full details are here.

Some other tips:

Metal crown caps – or drink bottle tops – can be put inside a used food tin, squashed closed and then recycled as normal for a food tin in the council’s recycling services.

Corks and wooden ice cream spoons can be recycled through the “wood” section of our local recycling points.
