Police officer in critical condition following Hungerford crash

Police are appealing for witnesses, as they investigate a serious collision in Hungerford, which left a police officer in a critical condition in hospital.

The officer was one of two in a police car which was involved in a crash with a lorry on the A4 Bath Road at around 11.40pm on Wednesday 27th February.

The other officer in the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

A 33 year old man from Wolverhampton, who was driving the lorry involved in the collision, wasn’t hurt and remains in custody, after he was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Superintendent Jim Weems, local police area commander for West Berkshire, said:

“Our thoughts are with these two officers, their families and their colleagues.

“They are receiving support at this difficult time.

“If anyone has any information relating to this incident, we would ask that they call the Thames Valley Police non-emergency number on 101 quoting reference 1570 (27/2).”

The Chair of the National Police Federation, John Apter, has joined other members of the emergency services from across the country in sending their support to the officers who were injured.
