Friday Social Food & Drink special

Claire Burdett returned to Kennet Radio to present her Friday Social show on Good Friday. The show was a food and drink special and featured a wide range of local businesses in the studio as well as on interview.

Friday Social on Kennet Radio discusses what’s trending on social media and relates it to Newbury and Thatcham.

Claire’s guests on the show were:

  • Emma Benson of Mrs B’s Kitchen in  Newbury
  • Lydia of pop-up food store Lonely Lentil
  • David Marklew from Inn at Home in Newbury
  • Simon Robinson from Hattingley Valley, near Alresford.

Emma Benson of Mrs B’s Kitchen, Newbury

Emma has run her catering firm Mrs B’s Kitchen in Thatcham and Newbury for more than 15 years.  A couple of months ago she opened her new venue for café customers in the former Crescent Signs warehouse, Faraday Road, Newbury.

Mrs B’s Kitchen has taken over the former Crescent Signs warehouse

Emma is particularly passionate about catering for a range of dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free and gluten-free options.

Lydia of Lonely Lentil, West Berkshire

The Lonely Lentil is a zero-waste pop-up shop selling unpackaged organic dry foods, herbs and spices. They pop up frequently at different locations in Newbury, Thatcham and the surrounding areas.

Customers bring along their own containers to fill.  All foods are sold by weight, so you can buy as little or as much as you like, saving both food waste and money.  They also produce their own recipe cards too to give customers inspiration.

David Marklew from Inn at Home, Newbury

The Inn at Home stocks thousands of craft beers and ciders, wines and specialist spirits. They pride themselves on favouring small producers and local brands, the closest of which is undoubtedly Newbury Gin from The Newbury Pub’s Distillery – pretty much next door!

They also host events from wine showcases to beer and spirit tastings, including the upcoming English Wine Week and Weird and Wild Beer tasting.  They stock a wide range of local English wine, including Hattingley Valley, Alder Ridge and All Angels.

Simon Robinson from Hattingley Valley, Alresford

Simon established Hattingley Valley in 2008, and its modern, eco-friendly winery in Wield  was completed in 2010. It was the first UK winery to adopt solar power.

Hattingley Valley has won many awards, including the ‘World Champion’ trophy for its 2011 Blanc de Blancs in the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships 2017, the ‘2014 Best Vintage Rosé’ for their 2011 sparkling rose.  Their 2014 Rosé has just been awarded the World Champion Rosé trophy at The Italian Wine Journal Challenge Euposia XI edition 2018-2019.
