Free online event for young people – have a voice in your community
Newbury Town Council are inviting young people to take part in a free online event following their Youth Voice Survey released earlier this year.
Working collaboratively with Berkshire Youth, Time To Talk West Berkshire, and Community United West Berkshire, Newbury Town Council are hosting ‘Ask a Young Person’ on Thursday 17th June at 4:30pm via Zoom.
The aim of this pilot event is for young people to take part in a round of short workshops to enable them to have a voice in their local community, by sharing their views, ideas and opinions to influence future activities, events and opportunities in and around Newbury. The Town Council are hoping that this will lead to identifying a group of young people to help advise them on youth policies in the future.
The workshops for the event have formed as a result of the ‘Make Your Voice Heard!’ survey released in January 2021 which received more than 230 individual responses. The themes that form the topic of these workshops are ‘Things to Do & Places to Meet’, ‘Mental Health’ and ‘Inclusivity’. The event and the workshops will be facilitated by Berkshire Youth and Time to Talk.
Cllr Gary Norman, Deputy Mayor, said:
When we asked young people if they felt listened to by us, your Councillors, they said that we needed to do more. On 17th June we want to invite young people to tell us what it is really like to be young and growing up in the area. We want to focus on the areas that they told us were most important; places to meet, mental health and inclusivity. All you need to do is show up and start talking, we are listening.

It is great that so many young people completed the ‘Make Your Voice Heard!’ survey and I would encourage young people to take part in this event. After dealing with the global pandemic, it is important not just for Berkshire Youth but also for our partners and supporters to make every effort to listen to the young people in our communities. I believe we should have young people at the heart of the decisions which affect them and should listen to and act upon their concerns, worries and ideas. I hope that these will help us find positive ways of creating a future for our young people.
