Get Involved

asset-5

There are lots of opportunities for you to get involved with Kennet Radio as a volunteer.

What would you like to do?

(Click on a tab)

Presenter
If you’d like to have a go at presenting a programme for Kennet Radio, please get in touch – we are looking for local people with personality and something to say, people who know the area and know what matters to local residents.

Don’t worry if you’re unsure about the technical side of things, we can show you what buttons to press, or even get someone to press the buttons for you.

Inevitably music is the lion’s share of our output, but we are not “just another music station”.  We have a strong local focus and we have programmes covering topics as diverse as eating out locally and the latest technology – so whatever you ideas, we’d like to hear them.  Local current affairs, local history, local sport, the best local pubs – just a few ideas that might get you thinking.

We expect our presenters to get involved with all aspects of the station’s output from time to time, including supporting our Outside Broadcast and Events team, the Kennet Krew, at events and functions around the area.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, this is how we DON’T do it…!

(High energy and very entertaining to watch, though!)

Programme producers are the people who have the programme ideas and put the programmes together.

Sometimes the Producer and the Presenter will be the same person, but it doesn’t have to be.

If you have great ideas for radio shows that will appeal directly to listeners in the Newbury and Thatcham area, then we’d love to hear from you.

Programme/Audio Editor

This is one of the more technical jobs, but it’s not that hard, all you really need is creative flair and the ability to find your way around a PC.

It involves editing together all the pieces of audio that the Presenters and Producers have made, cutting out the worst of the “er’s” and “um’s” that inevitably crop up in interviews, putting together audio “packages”, creating adverts, programme promo’s, etc.

You can work from home if you like – all you need is a reasonably up-to-date PC and some audio editing software – available free.

Fundraising and Community Involvement

This is one of the most important aspects of being involved with Kennet Radio.  As a community radio station, we depend entirely on the generous support of our volunteers and supporters to keep us on the air – we are not a commercial station purely selling advertising to earn our income.

Even though we are staffed by volunteers, it still costs money to run a community radio station, so we have to raise funds through fundraising events, grant applications, and sponsorship deals.

There are a lot of organisations competing for attention in the fundraising space, so we need innovative, attention-grabbing promotional ideas that will help to set us apart from the crowd.  If you’ve got ideas, we’d love you to share them with us!

Kennet Krew Outside Events Team

The Kennet Krew is our community events team, the public face of Kennet Radio.  We can be seen at all sorts of events in the Newbury and Thatcham area, from exhibitions and concerts to school fetes and community events, as well as private parties and commercial events.

We need volunteers to help set up the Kennet Krew stand/stage, man (or woman!) the stand, hand out Kennet Radio leaflets and merchandise, help out at the events, and help take it all down again at the end of the event.  One of our presenters will probably be there “front of house”, mike in hand, playing the platters that matter (sorry, did I really say that?!) but we still need lots of help and support behind the scenes – including taking pictures and recording short interviews with people.

Does this sound like something you’d like to do?  If so, please get in touch.  You will have to be prepared to make your own way to/from the events, although we can help with this sometimes.  You don’t need technical knowledge or radio experience – just a bubbly, outgoing personality, lots of enthusiasm, team spirit, and spare time at weekends and in the evening.

The Kennet Krew is a really important part of what we do as a community radio station, and we expect that all of our volunteers will support the Kennet Krew events and activities in some way or another.

News gathering and reporting

Can you get the stories, interview the key people, get pictures for our website, write it up in 100 words?  If so, we’d like to hear from you!

We are not offering an hourly local “breaking action eyewitness news” service at the moment, but we do want to make sure we are telling our listeners about what’s going on in the community.  This means interviews with key local people on topics of current interest, presented in a weekly magazine format, and short audio clips of 2-3 minutes to accompany the stories and pictures on our website.

It takes a team effort to put our news and current affairs material together – do you think you could be a part of it?

These roles are not exclusive, and the chances are, you will get involved in most of the things that Kennet Radio does, to some degree or other.

If you’re interested, click here to download our Volunteer Form to tell us about yourself, your background in radio (if any – it’s not essential!) and your ideas for how you would like to get involved.

Or you can email getinvolved@kennetradio.com and we’ll send the form to you.

We look forward to hearing from you!
